Yogyakarta to Host the 19th All Indonesia Young Koi Show
The Special Region of Yogyakarta is set to welcome one of Indonesia’s most prestigious koi events as the 19th All Indonesia Young Koi Show takes place from June 26 to 28, 2026, at Hall A of the Jogja Expo Center (JEC). Organized by the Yogyakarta Marine and Fisheries Agency in collaboration with the Indonesian Koi Lovers Association (APKI), the national competition will be held for the coveted Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X Cup.
Koi from various breeders, hobbyists, and industry professionals are expected to compete
Around 600 koi from various categories and size classes are expected to compete, attracting breeders, hobbyists, and industry professionals from across Indonesia. The event aims to showcase the finest young koi while supporting the continued development of the country’s ornamental fish sector. According to R. Hery Sulistio Hermawan, Head of the Yogyakarta Marine and Fisheries Agency, the event serves a broader purpose than competition alone. It is designed to promote education, strengthen industry networks, and create new business opportunities within the ornamental fish community.
“This event is not only a competition, but also a platform for education, promotion, and business development. We hope it will encourage the production of high-quality koi capable of competing at both national and international levels,” he said.
Yogyakarta was selected as the host city due to its growing community of koi enthusiasts and breeders, as well as its strong cultural heritage, tourism appeal, and creative economy. Organizers expect the influx of participants and visitors to generate positive economic benefits for local businesses while introducing the region to a wider audience.
Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the judging process firsthand and admire some of the country’s finest koi. The event is also expected to provide valuable insights into the ornamental fish industry, including the standards used to evaluate koi quality. In addition to the competition, a range of supporting activities has been planned. A dedicated talk show will bring together approximately 200 participants, including breeders, entrepreneurs, academics, and members of the public. Topics will cover koi breeding techniques, quality improvement, industry development, and business opportunities within the ornamental fish sector.
Various educational activities will play an important role
Educational activities will also play an important role. A coloring competition involving around 300 kindergarten and early childhood education students will introduce younger generations to the world of fisheries and aquaculture. Meanwhile, 20 small and medium-sized enterprises specializing in fish-based products will showcase and market their products throughout the event.
Koi remain one of the most valuable freshwater ornamental fish species in Indonesia. Their striking colors, unique patterns, and elegant body shapes make them highly sought after by collectors and hobbyists. Top-quality specimens can command prices reaching tens or even hundreds of millions of rupiah, highlighting the significant economic potential of the industry.
Registration remains open for breeders and hobbyists wishing to participate in the competition. Organizers hope the event will continue to drive growth in Indonesia’s ornamental fish sector, improve the quality of domestically bred koi, and further strengthen Yogyakarta’s position as a leading center for koi and ornamental fish development in the country.
